This is Todd Hougaard, PTA President of Jordan Ridge Elementary, former youth lacrosse coach, and parent of a Riverton High lacrosse player. I want to tell you about our Acceptance Day event on Saturday, October 14, 2017.
On the lacrosse side, we are involving 4 high schools:
Lacrosse games will go on throughout the day at Bingham High School.
This part of the event will be a celebration by the lacrosse community for their official acceptance as a high school sport. It's also where the name for the event comes from - Acceptance Day.
The other part of the event will be activities that focus on two issues that are of most concern for parents, teachers AND students in our schools, not only in the Jordan School District, but probably the whole state. SUICICDE and BULLYING.
Each one of our high schools has been touched by suicide, so there will also be events tied into each game to raise awareness on this issue. We will also have classes from professionals dealing with positive action items that we all can put into practice immediately, which can make real impact on our lives, and on the lives of those around us.
Suicide is the #1 cause of death for teens in Utah, and we need to take action. A full schedule of classes can be found on our website.
During the times when elementary and middle school ages are there, anti-bullying events will take center stage. Again, we will be taking a positive approach in classes and activities. Instead of a message of “Don’t Bully,” the themes will be “Show Kindness,” “Be Accepting,” etc. Statistics show that bullying peaks in 6th grade. We need to do something about it.
You may be asking, “How does lacrosse tie into this?” I would say, “It’s a metaphor.” Lacrosse is like the new kids at school – will they be accepted by the students already at the school? How will the popular kids (football, basketball, volleyball, cheerleading, etc.) react? Then I would ask, how do we react when someone new or different shows up to our school or neighborhood?
If we can bring everyone together, I think we can make an impact. I really think this will be the most important event our PTA will have all year.
